I only have the printer for some days, but so far I’m happy.

I was a bit nervous before purchasing because I had read many of complaints about an earlier model, Artisan , having many of paper jams. But the paper handling on my 810 was flawless, if a tiny bit noisy while it pulls in the paper. The real printing is calm, and of great quality. The paper tray feels a bit flimsy, but is easy to take off or put, and there is no fuss to loading your paper in it. It can expand to hold legal size paper, and has a separate area for smaller sized papers, typically for photo printing paper. The package comes with three sheets of Epson high quality 4×6 glossy photo paper, so I printed three photos as a test and I couldn’t be more happy with the photo print quality. I have been using an HP Wireless printer up till now model 5850 and the print quality of the Artisan 810 far outstrips that HP, with much deeper blacks and black tones, and more rich looking color, which is most likely caused by superior ink quality more than the printer quality. As well, they promise that their inks are acid free and will last three or four times longer than drug store prints. Another pre purchase worry was that there were complaints about the Artisan being a big ink hog. Too early to tell, but I have printed those three photos and a 4th on plain paper, and about 25 pages of text some with graphics and the ink levels haven’t budged still. So far so good on ink handling. I has been surprised and happy too that the 810 printer comes with an TWO black ink cartridges, so you will have another one when it runs out. Nice! also, the inks provided are the same capacity as the refills, whereas many printers I have seen came with ink cartridges that have a lower capacity. A nice feature is that when you plug in a camera memory card in the front slots, not only can you see and crop the photos on the printer’s screen, but the photos on the card may also be remotely viewed by your computer on the same wifi! neat. It warns on the box that this feature may not work with Mac computers, but it worked good with my IMac. Have not tried printing from the iPhone as they assert you may be able to do, though I suspect I will not use that feature much. I love the big touch screen operation too, it’s pretty slick. Made some copies of many simple pencil sketches and they were good, and it wasn’t evident to tell which was the original or copy, but I have not really tested the copier out enough as still to give a good opinion about its copy qualities.

Customer review from the Vine™, Program What’s this?

When I saw the chance to review this Epson 810 All in One through the Vine program, I jumped at it. I have used All in ones for nearly ten years, sampling a range of printers from HP, Canon, Brother, etc. I find this printer excels in some regions and fails in only one.

    Here’s my take on it:

    PROS:

    1. Print quality is as good as Epson claims. If these prints will really last four times longer than drugstore prints is still up for grabs who has years to check out this claim? Still, the text and photos are nice indeed.

    2. Though I may never use it again, the coloring book feature is fun. For families with small kids, I am sure this feature will be appreciated.

    3. Being able to charge up my mp3 player from the port on the front of the printer is a nice little extra. Anytime I can avoid powering up the computer for such a small task, I am happy. And now I have a fast way to do that.

    4. I love the bright, easy to read control panel. The menu will easily take you where you have to go, like a fast check of ink levels again, without powering up the computer.

    5. Ink handling appears to be conservative. I have gone through a ream of paper without exhausting the standard not high capacity black cartridge.

    6. This printer really can use recycled paper. Over the years, I have been restricted in my paper to 24 lb paper as 20 recycled paper caused repeated jams with my other printers. This feature alone will mean a reduction in my paper bills.

    7. The printer will include an auto duplexer. You do have to setup this function on printer preferences, but I enjoy using fewer sheets.

    8. Included in the box was a single printable dvd. I tried making a color label, and it seems great. I will be purchasing printable CDs and DVDs just for the pleasure of having nice looking disks.

    9. The printer itself is good looking and fits in well with the other equipment on my desk. No reason a printer should be ugly, is there?

    CONS:

The scanner works only through a USB connection to my computer, though you may be able to save a scan to a memory card. Why is that? Is there something special about wireless that prevents sending a scan to a computer?

    UNKNOWN:

I haven’t used the fax because my VOIP phone service doesn’t now support faxing.

Overall, I am a happy user. This is a good printer for a family network.

    Four stars!

    UPDATE: November 25, 2009

I reinstalled the software, using the software downloaded from Epson. Voila! Epson Scan now appears on my desktop, and my problem is solved. If it were possible to change the number of stars, I could now award this printer five stars!

    UPDATE: December 1, 2009

Here’s the trick. You have to start the Epson Scan from your computer, rather than from the printer where you will be standing when you put the photo on the scanner. Then you will be able to get the scan on your computer and without hitching it up to the printer directly.

    &nbsp,&nbsp,

I looked for a quality unit to replace my old seperate laser printer and old laser fax machine. They were both just B&W, and seriously worn out, could only use one page at a time! also, I just inheriteted a bunch of old photographs that I have to scan soon, which in turn creates the have to create custom CD’s and DVD’s. I settled on the Epson Artisan 810.

I noticed that many units are marketed as “All In One” but do not have fax, so customer beware! Those have only scan, copy, and print. A true all in one should also include fax IMHO.

In general, I looked for the following in a rounded unit:

    High quality photo scanning

Printing onto CD’s directly without a label 4×6 and eight 1/2 x eleven photo paper

    Easy multi page faxing

Easily attached to a wireless network so our six computers can share

    Quick B&W letter printing

Seperate ink tanks to decrease wasted cartridges

Automatic ‘duplex printing’ to print out on both sides using half the psaper.

An easy way to scan straight to email.

Needed to look GOOD, and be usuable in seconds.

    AND to use little electricity

The Epson 810 is a perfect match!!! It does everything we need, and does it simply and little human input.

All funtions and interfaces are conceived. You may be either ‘PC Centric’ and do everything from your PC, or you may be copier centric, and do nearly everything just standing there at the copier, and get nearly everything done. Simpple controls. You have the choice to ‘print’ your document to the Epson FAX, which bypasses the paper and simply sends a high quality fax. Epson included some iof these ‘nicely done’ features you’ll learn and love. There are only two buttons on the command panel, everything else is touch screen as needed.

The quality is primo, the unit is easy to set up and use, and the breath of features you will need are amazingly complete. Well engineereed. Operating costs seem to be normal for ink jets. The electricity is rated at $2 or less per year.

    We’re happy with the product.//JIM//

    &nbsp,&nbsp,

This looks to be a great printer. I’m using it as a substitute for my old Cannon PIXMA 3000 which just gave up the ghost. When you read the other reviews that talk about a 30 minute set up time, do not look at that as a sign of difficulty or possible incompetance on the reviewer. This unit does do a 20 30 self diagnostic as part of the set up procedure. Pictures are clean and clear. And HP has the message to create separate ink carts for each color rather than having to toss them all out when you run out of one single color.

    What I like:

The wireless capability. Can print from any PC in the house on this one.

    Separate Ink Cartridges

    Duplex printing

HP has pre sent handling pattern prepared for you like fast utility print, duplex printing, printing for photos, etc.

Tools that assist you see what your ink handling will be like.

As indicated by the HP site, low cost per page printing. Fingers crossed here.

    Dislikes:

Big footprint on the desk. Oh well.

Bonus: If you act before year end, your old printer may meet the criteria for a $50 rebate when you return it to HP. See the HP product site for details. This helped knock $50 off this price.

    GREAT PRINTER,

By&nbsp,Arizona man Arizona See all my reviews

I have only had this printer a day but I’m happy with it. The installation does take some time .. about 30 min which HP said it would but it is all done automatically from the installation software. The print quality is good and fast depending upon the web site feed. Unlike the last reviewer, I just let the installation take it is course and I have had no problems with any HP popups so far. I’m using a wireless network at home and I was surprised how easy the HP software located all the wireless network info and connected without any problem. So far I’m happy with this printer and could greatly recommend it particularly for wireless users.

I have read all the reviews and could like to offer an opinion. I have had mine about a month, and I love it. Do not know what the other person doed when doing the duplex 2 side printing but my printouts have come out looking exactly as they do on the screen, no 50 reduction. I also experienced a 30 minutes setup time but I have come to expect that with new software. It prints great and fast, just wished the cartridges lasted longer. I have also had no pop ups under IE or Firefox. I propose doing the custom install and decide what you want to install and what you do not. Hope this helps future purchasers.

    The Holy Grail of AIOs?,
    October 4, 2009

By&nbsp, charlesn New York, NY See all my reviews

    &nbsp,&nbsp,

just disclosure: I have had this printer up and running for less than 48 hours. But the early results have been so very good, I felt a review was in order. If you, like me, have been on an endless search for an AIO that really worked as advertised and could hold own with minimal agreement and more task particular printers, then I believe your search ended with the 990.

Setup: A+. I have two Macs, one a PowerMac G5 running 10.5, the other a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, both on my Airport Extreme simultaneous dual band network, and setup was about as close to plug and play as you could get. Just make sure that if you are running 10.6, you download all the new drivers from Canon’s web site. The software CD filled with the printer isn’t updated for Snow Leopard.

Wireless Performance: As noted above, connecting to my home network was a snap. I have had no dropped connections over two days. Now, I have never had a problem printing wirelessly in the past, but scanning wirelessly and reliably? Forget it. At least, till the 990, which worked flawlessly on both machines from the 1st scan. You’d swear that Apple, and not Canon, had intended this hardware/software solution. Pop in a document, click scan, decide which computer you want to send it to and you are done.

Printing Quality: A. Superb quality on both black text and color graphics, and all reasonably fast.

Photo Quality: have not gotten into this still, but professional reviews posted far point to that the photo printing performance is excellent.

Scanning/Copying Quality: A. Scans and copies are very good. Have not tried negs or slides as still.

Ease of Use: A. If Apple intended own printer, this is how it could work. An surprisingly intuitive interface.

I’ll post an update after I have put it through its paces a while longer, but it is a certain five stars out of the box. Thanks for taking the time to read this review I hope you found the information useful in helping you make a purchasing decision!

    Update as of 10/16/09:

The Bad News: inside two weeks of posting my review, this printer dropped in price by $100! Oh well. That’ll teach me to be 1st in line to purchase a new model! :

The Good News: I rated it five stars at $299 and I still think it is every bit as good as noted in my review. At $199, it is now a steal of a deal also.

    UPDATE AS OF 12/7/09

The professional reviews are now coming in for the MP990, and they are raving: Computer buyer gave it a nine out of 10, and . Gave it Editor’s Choice, stating that they had a hard time coming up with any “cons” for their conclusion. I remain totally pleased after two months of use.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

Today I received my new Canon PIXMA MP990 Inkjet Photo All In One Printer from Amazon. There’s only one word to describe this printer: Wow!

After unpacking the printer, installing the drivers and software from the included CD ROM, I updated the drivers and software for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from Canon’s web site. The Wi Fi setup took about one minute and it was working flawlessly all day.

Then I scanned some papers and printed them out the quality is just amazing.

There are six ink cartridges in total in their installed order:

    Magenta 221

    Black 221

    Grey 221

    Pigment Black 220

    Cyan 221

    Yellow 221

There is a pigment based black ink cartridge 220 that’s only used for printing text. The rest of the dye based ink cartridges 221 were used for printing photos. The text output is as clear or better than a laser printer, and the photo output is totally stunning IMHO.

If you need a new printer for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard get the new Canon PIXMA MP990 printer. You will not be disappointed.

    REAL NAME
    &nbsp,&nbsp,

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

This is my 1st review of the Canon PIXMA MP990. On 1st look you kind of get the feeling your looking at a small tank and it feels like it when you lift it up. The setup was easy thought at 1st it was a little daunting to see all those ink cartridges and a print head to put in. The print head went right in and was easy, just slid in and secure with a lever. It took some minuets to be sure each ink cartridge was in the correct slot and seated properly so the light on the end came on. The one place things could go wrong here is a part of plastic that turn that covers the ink port on the cartridge that may break in the wrong way if you do not follow directions. The one Doh!! moment I had was when I turned it on it kept showing a door was open and I just could not see it at 1st. There is a small door inside the print just under the printer platen that must pulled down when I taked all the tape used to secure the printer. So then it was all set up and I turned it on. It whirred away for awhile priming the print head and going through many diagnostics till it was prepared. It had many special paper just for the setup that nearly felt like thin cardboard that it used for the test print, they have many special information for it in the documentation.

I’ve got mine set up so my XP machine is connected with a USB connection and I have a WiFi connection to my Vista Laptop down stairs. I do not have my router password protected shame on me!!! so it was not most of a test setting it up to connect the laptop to it. You do have many special software you have to load on the remote machines so it can see the printer and also scan to it but that was not any issue setting up.

So far I have not really done much printing on this machine put I noticed that only after printing a manual of around 60 pages, one eight by eleven B/W photo, and a couple of smaller four by 5’s that the colored ink is already down by a quarter so I am guessing it uses up ink pretty fast, time will tell. The black ink so far is showing no handling. So I can not say much about handling but the color of the photos is good using both the Canon paper and many cheaper photo paper I have.

For the scanner so far I’m impressed. Looking at the build quality through the glass you may be able to see that the scan head runs on two steel rods while most other multi printers I have taken separately just run on a plastic track built into the floor of the scanner. I do greatly recommend that you use the Mp Navigator EX that comes with the software. I am not sure if it was just the old Paint Shop Pro eight software I used or you may be able to only see the higher scan settings in the EX software but I could only see 1200dpi in the Paint Shop software and I can see 4800dpi using the EX software. For color photos it seems like 600dpi is as high as I can get while with slides and negatives you may be able to go up to the 4800dpi. So I guess if you want to do 1200dpi for photos you could have to use a separate software. It does though recognize the edges of the photos and will scan them individually. Using the special setup for the slides was a little puzzling with a chart as it took me awhile to realize I just had to take the film holder out and lay the rest of the holder back on the platen agreeing up the hole with the pin on the side of the platen. There’s a separate lighted platen under the big while backing that comes off that lights up when you tell it you’re using negatives or slides. I has been amazed at the scan at 1200dpi how well one of the bigger 35 millimeter slides came out. I printer it and it looked like a regular photo. I took a magnifying glass to it and could hardly see any pixelation.

Well that is about all I can think of now, I will attempt and keep this updated as I use things or any issues come up.
