Rating: Had high hopes but was disapointed!
I bought the Freud EB100 because I wanted to speed up the edge banding procedure in my shop. I now use an old steam iron and it really works good. I felt if this machine worked properly, I could speed things up. Well.The 1st thing I noticed was the banding falled off the edge of the bed on the bander. This doesn’t influence the running of the unit but it dont say much for QC. Out of the box, it could not put the banding on over the full surface , the banding ran up hill.The information say that the guides are factory set and should be prepared to use! I used a digital micrometer to experiment with different heights of the two guides. Modification of the guides are hard because they’re mounted on a stud with a set screw. When you loosen the screw, it may move a little or many. You must move it and measure to know. I set them high, I set them low, I set one high and one low.For four hours,I adjusted the guides and ran it. On a 42″ counter board I got it close but it still started low on the beginning edge and ended high. I ran a 96″ board and it still got off the board at the end. I was disappointed. I really felt this machine could be a good addition to my shop. Bottom line, I can put it on straighter and fasted with the steam iron.I clamp my shelves in B&D Work Mate, cut my edge banding to size, and iron it on. Since I bought this item from Amazon, I knew I could dont have problem with my return. They were gracious and the procedure was simple. Thank you Amazon. I’m a loyal buyer.

Rating: Great buy! Just be patient. 100x better then an iron!!
If you do any kind of pre glued edgebanding with an iron and you dont want a big machine or just cant pay for one this is great. At just under $300 this paid for it self ten times over in my 1st job. Yes it was tough to get it figured out lining it up perfect so your tape doesn’t run off the edge of your panel, but once you get it its a snap. Don’t rely on the rubber feet to keep it in place I press hard to be sure the tape is on there so I had to drill many hole just behind the fence and screw it down to the work bench. Also the rubber/polyurethane wheel with the skate board wheel bearings on it looks to be a little cheaply made. The bearing on one side isn’t perfectly in the center. Maybe 1/32″ off but causes the tape to run up the wheel instead of strait. So I took it off and flipped it upsidown. Works great. I also set the machine back on my work bench and expanded the table so that i could band wider panels. I do think its still faster to edgeband 24″ x 96″ panels with the iron. Just to big for this machine. Oh and another thing, when I 1st started using it I noticed that the tape didn’t stick really really good every now , then so just to be sure after every panel I pull it off the machine and roll it with the same roller I use with the iron takes only two seconds but well worth the time for insurance. And if I were you, if you dont already, get a laminate trimer to flush trim the tape. Dont mess with the knifes you slide on there. I use the Bosch Colt and love it. I use a 1/16 or 1/8″ roundover bit and set it so that the radius just barely touches the top of the tape. Gives it a flush trim and a somewhat eased edge the just hit it with many 320 sand paper and your done.

Rating: Put that iron down!
Just started using this today. I have edge banded many kitchens by hand iron and “J” roller, and have been looking for a step up by productivity. In general, this edge bander feels well built and tough. It had sustained many damage legs bent, corner of table. But, after many modifications, and removing a washer I’m now able to keep the banding properly aligned. I have done many shelving with white mel. Banding, and veneered banding. Gun looks to be able to melt glue at a fast rate and roller works well to set it. I like that the banding is nearly cool by the time it’s off the bander. A regular counter may be done in well over half the length of time to do it manually. In general a good buy, but will not work optimally “out of the box”.

Rating: The “Best of Breed” By Default
The Freud edge banding system occupies a distinctive niche between the household iron and multi thousand dollar aka “real production” edgers. So far as I can tell, it is the only choice for semi professional production of heat set edge banding.

I find it a greatly compromised tool. As the old National Geographics used to it is in a land of problems and promises. Conceptually, it is a darn smart idea. The execution may be a whole lot better.

Let’s look at edge banding for a minute. It is not much thicker than a business card exclusive of adhesiveand only fractionally wider than the wood it’s applied to. It takes a just total of heat to soften the glue. The guide system on a bander needs to hold material flat, square and unbowed, though everything that’s being done earlier nearly guarantees the reverse.

The EB100 on occasion does the trick. There is only so much precision one can expect from stamped steel guides. When the machine works, it is many faster than the household iron. When it does not, it is hard to resist the temptation to throw the sucker out the window. Though one can remove improperly applied edging, it takes more effort than to apply it by hand in the 1st place.

Freud should improve the guide system and the table on the EB100 to make it a really useful machine. Machined, precision guides could are needed for this operation. And they shoud re think using heat set banding on a machine table that’s subject to high temperatures. After 20 minutes of operation, the front edge of the table peels up. This does not impair function, it just seems hell.

I know woodworkers that get excellent results from this system. In spite of important experience with precision machinery, I can not copy their results. Maybe if I were more experienced, I could. I’m uneasy with a machine that makes me guess continually.
