  • Toshiba 52HM84 52-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection DLP TV Description:
Toshiba takes digital light processing DLP technology into the future with the 52 inch TheaterWide 52HM84 HD ready rear projection TV. The 16:9 52HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN Toshiba Advanced Light Engine, depending on the Texas Instruments HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances light and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720 progressive resolution 720p. Toshiba’s TheaterWide TVs challenge direct view CRT models when it comes to reproducing deep blacks and details in black or shadowy scenes. What is DLP? DLP, or digital light processing, is a technology that bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousands of hinge mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a micromirror device below, pictured with the head of a pin. Each of the mirrors may be pointed toward or away from the light source thousands of times per second, not only minute color detail, but also sharper resolution than LCD displays. This set is HDTV prepared it needs an optional high definition receiver to get HD signals, but can improve standard definition video, thanks to Toshiba’s multistep PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes the three major picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. All incoming signals are transformed by the fitted scaler to go with the DLP chip’s native 720p resolution. PixelPure encompasses eight different processing circuits. Among its parts are 6.2 million pixel oversampling for higher perceived resolution, real speed progressive scanning which uses extra sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines, a Magic Square algorithm for smooth, natural color gradation, Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation, and Color Detail Enhancer to maintain good image detail in color saturated areas. DLP technology uses an optical semiconductor, called the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD chip, to digitally control light. The chip holds a rectangular array of up to 1.3 million microscopic mirrors, each measuring less than one fifth the width of a human hair. A DMD panel’s micromirrors are mounted on tiny hinges that enable them to tilt either toward the light source on or away from it off, creating a light or black pixel on the projection surface. The bit streamed image code entering the semiconductor directs each mirror to switch on and off up to some number of thousand times per second, enabling the mirrors to reflect pixels in up to 1,024 shades of gray. The HD2+ DLP chip assures an ultraclean image by filling in the dimples, or vias, in the mirrors to avoid stray light. It increases both light and contrast, ensuing in an remarkable color corrected contrast percentage 2,200:1 at 1,100 ANSI lumens. The set’s TheaterFine HD Super good Pitch screen decreases the physical space between the lines on the lenticular screen, ensuing in a better, sharper, more in depth picture. Toshiba’s DFine Hi Speed VSM velocity scan modulation improves contrast and in general picture sharpness, while the CableClear DNR+ digital sound reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, more eliminating video sound “snow” for a clean, crisp image. Theater Mode circuitry 3:2 pulldown switch identifies original film based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more precisely reproduce the original 24 frame per second material. A 3 D Y/C 4 MB, 10 bit digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and considerably decreases detail sound, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately in depth scenes. Color temperature controls let you to change white balance. The Warm setting decreases the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that’s ideal for display in a dimly lit room. Medium and Cool setting supply a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased. The 52HM84 has lots of inputs for connecting all your audio and video parts. In back you will find two RF, 2 mixed video, two S Video, and two HD ColorStream part video, also as a High Definition Multimedia Interface HDMI digital input. HDMI is an uncompressed, all digital audio video interface that supports standard, improved, or high definition video, plus eight channel digital audio all on a single cable. A set of front composite and S video inputs make hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap. Other features are HD Window dual tuner POP picture on picture with PIP sound for listening to two programs at the same time, the new Radiance DC lamp with high light and lower power modes for expanded life, individual audio video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, Real Speed progressive scanning to create smoother diagonal lines, the Color temporary Improver for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding, and the Color Detail Enhancer to preserve good image detail in color saturated regions. On the side from the 20 watts per channel stereo speaker system, the 52HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, and SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. In the meantime, SRS WOW combines 3 D Sound simulated surround sound from any stereo audio with TruBass yet another low frequency enhancement and concentrate which clarifies voices. The StableSound volume leveler removes drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break. What’s in the Box

I researched televisions before purchasing the 52HM84. I compared DLP, LCD and Plasma. I decided on the DLP caused by its size and picture quality. I had narrowed my research down to the Mitsubishi and the Toshiba since these both us the HD2+ DLP chip. The Mitsubishi had a glare on the screen and the Toshiba did not. The quality of the picture is remaining. The technology to clean up messy analog signals is remaining. I couldn’t be happier with this buy. I greatly recommend a customer to buy the agreeing Toshiba ST5284 stand for the set. Together the set is perfect! GOOD WORK TOSHIBA!

Excellent set for a reasonable price,
    January 4, 2005

By&nbsp,OC inhabitant Huntington Beach, CA United States See all my reviews

I spent over two years looking at high meaning televisions before settling on the Toshiba. The features that sold me were the remaining picture quality, both light and clearness, also as the reasonable price for the size and features of the set. I spent some number of months watching the prices in the retail stores, but never found the price dipping much below the $3000 that every retail store looks to want to sell it for.

I have never bought an item as big as this from Amazon, and I was a bit unwilling to do so. Given the reviews to date and comments about dependability, I was worried about purchasing from a company that didn’t have a good expanded warranty choice available. While does sell 3rd party contracts, I didn’t find them to be especially well recognized. I leaned toward purchasing the unit from Sears, where the expanded warranty is supported by a big service organization, and the organization is staffed by full time Sears employees who have generally been professional with other things I needed service on. The down side was a $700 difference in price between Sears and Amazon.

What convinced me to decide over the local merchants was that I was able to double the warranty by charging it on my American Express card. My only other hesitation was that I needed the unit carried up a flight of stairs, and while I knew that the local Sears delivery person could carry it up, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a trucking company contracted by Amazon.

My set has been delivered yesterday by Eagle Freight. They scheduled my delivery between noon and 5:00 pm, and they showed up at 4:00 pm, after 1st calling to let me know they were on their way. The drivers were friendly and professional, and they gladly carried the set up to the second floor and waited while I confirmed it worked properly. They took away the empty packaging. Since I’m familiar with electronics equipment, I knew how to swiftly set it up without their help. I am not sure they could have recognized how to set up an HDTV had I needed help, but luckily this wasn’t an issue for me.

The TV was up and running inside three minutes, and the quality is totally breathtaking. After much trepidation about buying such a big item over the internet, I’m quite happy that I chose to do so. I am still debating if to add an expanded warranty or just take a chance on it with the American Express warranty doubler as a backup. The expanded warranties don’t usually cover the substitute bulb, which cost roughly $300. Because this is the most probably part to fail, I suspect that I could be better off taking my chances and skipping the expanded warranty choice. But, it is nice to know this choice exists if I need it.

For those of you thinking about buying this item from Amazon, I could recommend you give it a attempt, as long as your credit card will double the warranty, and you don’t need much help in hooking up the set. I’ll update this review after having some weeks to get more familiar with the TV.

    3/5/2005

After having this set for some months, I’m still completely impressed with it. The quality is remaining, and I have had no issues to date with dependability. I did buy a four year Warrantech warranty for around $200. This extends the warranty beyond the one year Toshiba warranty for a total of five years of coverage. Hopefully I’ll never need it, but for $200 it seemed well worth the price.

Inspect screen carefully before accepting delivery.,
    October 3, 2005

By&nbsp,Y2KPony “Leif” CA, USA See all my reviews

Before signing and accepting delivery of any Toshiba DLP, make sure to check the screen to be sure that the covering on the inside of the screen is uniform. On mine, there was a circle about 10″ in diameter that you may see in some lighting and when the TV is off! it’ll appear lighter than the bordering regions at times and may be annoying. I called Toshiba and had a service man come out and though he acknowledged that this is common, Toshiba won’t replace the screen. I could have given them a negative ten if it were possible just because of their approach. Look at the screen carefully before accepting or buying. If you see this problem, refuse to accept it. Or else just purchase a Samsung or Mitsubishi DLP to avoid the problem I have.

This TV is excellent on style, small footprint, and small comparative weight. This TV is best if your mainly watch DVD’s or HDTV, and it’s mainly a bedroom or second room TV, not a main TV. The picture quality and size aren’t the best for regular cable TV, and the price certainly isn’t. It’s uncomfortable to connect all the needed wires as they’re all on one side or below the TV, , then you’re supposed to thread them all through a removable panel with a two inch hole. As well, this variant doesn’t include a fitted HDTV tuner. The computer monitor feature is good for hooking up to a laptop, but it uses up the only HDMI cable port.

Bought this TV in December 2004 have had a 13″ Aquos for a year and love it. About mid January I started noticing ‘flickering’ of the picture. On occasion it does it and can get really black too and on occasion it does not. I replaced the cables with Monster brand and bought a new DVD recorder so I KNOW it must be the TV. I am unwilling to take it to a service center now since on occasion it works good. Frustrating! I called Sharp and they had no idea.Told me just to take it to a service center. Too costly a set for this kind of problem.

  • Toshiba 46HM84 46-Inch TheaterWide HD-Ready Rear-Projection DLP TV Description:
Toshiba takes digital light processing DLP technology into the future with its 46 inch TheaterWide 46HM84 HD ready rear projection TV. The 16:9 46HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN Toshiba Advanced Light Engine, depending on the Texas Instruments HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances light and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720 progressive resolution 720p. This set is HDTV ready it needs an optional high definition receiver to get HD signals, but can improve standard definition video, thanks to Toshiba’s multistep PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes the three major picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. Medium and Cool supply a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased. The 46HM84 has lots of inputs for connecting all your audio and video parts. On the side from the 20 watts per channel stereo speaker system, the 46HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, and SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. In the meantime, SRS WOW combines 3 D Sound simulated surround sound from any stereo audio with TruBass yet another low frequency enhancement and concentrate which clarifies voices. The StableSound volume leveler removes drastic volume spikes while changing channels or throughout commercial breaks.
