The video quality is superb, as is easy use. Here are some hints and things I noticed. The battery out of the box won’t power on the camera and needs many minutes of charge to show 0. You may be able to operate the camera from the charger but the battery isn’t being charged, says the manual.

There are two 1920×1080 picture quality modes: MXP at 24 mbps and FXP at 17 mbps and three at 1440×1080: XP+, SP and LP, at 12, seven and five mbs, in that order. I believe it defaults to LP out of the box, which is 1440×1080 at seven mbps. I propose you choose FXP to get true 1920×1080 resolution. Upping to 24 mbps may be a smart idea only if you’re going to do many of post editing I can not see an improvement over FXP. Recording times with a 16GB card are 1:25, 2:05, 2:50, 4:45 and 6:05, in that order.

When the camera is OFF, pressing the DISP button on the camera body will show battery capacity in minutes and . Pressing DISP when ON turns the LCD to max light. IOW, you may be able to set the LCD light for normal indoor use with the menu and instantly set it bright for outdoor use. Useful.

The CINE mode looks to digitally soften the image, there may many color change but I did not notice it from the shots I took in a park. The PF30 and PF24 rates show a jerkiness when panning as you could expect from a lower frame rate. I think these rates are simulated because all recording is done at 60i. As an example when I played PF24 stepping one frame at a time I saw the same image for three steps, then the next. The “3 steps” differs with both PF24 and PF30. OTOH, PF24 is useful in low light situations as it permits the HF200 slow the shutter speed down to 1/6 sec.

Previous Canon users will find the menu system easy and familiar, alike to their still cameras. The joystick is “big” and has a positive, certain feedback feel to it. Menu navigation looks easier and clearer than earlier Canons I have used. There’s a big Font choice. Good!

The Power On button is deep in a groove that makes it not likely to accidentally turn on. But with your right hand in the nice grip you must use the left to press it On my fingers do not reach. No loss, you need the other hand to open the LCD panel anyway. The zoom lever on top is a center finger control. The bordering Photo button is for a trained index finger. Record, at the back, is thumb operated. You may also use an LCD panel button to Record.

The fast Start feature means you may be able to close the LCD to save power runs at 1/3 normal and be prepared to shoot in about one sec after opening it. Note, if you close the LCD panel while recording it’ll continue to record so slamming it shut doesn’t stop the shot.

The still photo features are quite amazing. The resolution is three megapixels, but a good 3mp! you may be able to shoot continuously at three or five frames/sec. And you may be able to shoot at the same fast frame rates with flash! The flash is really a high power white LED, not a xenon tube. There’s a separate warm white LED for video that works OK to 5 6 feet.

There are the common auto white balance, auto contact, instant concentrate features and so on that you may read about above. There is face detection for correct concentrate. They all work well. I like the Vivid color setting for most all shooting video and photo. It’s a slight pump in saturation that assists if you primarily view using your laptop LCD. Instant AutoFocus is aptly named. There’s a pretty big IAF sensor beside the lens for this function. The 15x zoom, a 1st for me, is completely useful all the way out. Remarkable.

Battery life BP 809 takes a certain second place to 16GB storage. I just checked and it indicates 100, 94 minutes. But you may be able to of course purchase bigger batteries. I use the smaller BP 808 battery from my FS100 SD video cam as a backup. With the fast Start feature can be turned off power can be used between shots and this will usually use more juice that real recording. Figure three to five times battery vs video: one hour of video needs 3+ hours of battery cap. Unless you purchase a charger you have to charge in the camera. Only one sample so far, but it seemed to take a bit more than an hour to charge from 0.

The supplied Pixela software is minimal. You may be able to add up to 99 shots into an M3TS file. It may be played on video players like Popcorn Hour and the WD HD TV player. I have both and strongly recommend the $99 WD over the $230 PCH. The PCH can connect to Internet servers, its major assert to fame. These players may also play the MTS format directly copied from the SD card but there’s a 1 2 sec delay between each shot. Pixela allows you to pick and chose shots, trim a given shot, and add titles and audio. I do not know how to get past the 99 shot bound with Pixela I made about 170 shots in the park yesterday.

All in all, I luves it.

I need a HD camcorder for my new born baby, but with a restricted budget. So I compared canon HF200, Sony CX100 and Panasonic TM20R since they’re all in sub 600 range. I tried all of them in local stores and settled with canon HF200, though it is a bit costly than cx100 and TM20R.

The sensor of HF200 is the biggest one among these three, one /4″ 1/5″ for CX100, 1/6″ for TM20R. It guaranteed best resolution, 2.99 Megapixels 2.3 M for cx100, 1.14M for TM20R and in my experience bigger sensor also helps reduce the sound in black environment. Indeed, minimal illumination condition for HF200 is 0.4 lux, much better than thre other two. I took a couple of sample shots in local stores and the picture from HF200 for black environment is satisfactory. Sony cx100 is barely satisfactory and Panasonic TM20R is total crap, not as good as my webcam.

After I bought HF200, I never regretted! The video quality is just superb. For the 1920×1080 quality videos, it has two modes: MXP24Mbps and FXP17Mbps. To be honest I can not tell the quality difference between these two. I guess unless you’re gonna do big editing, FXP is good enough for daily handling. So on a 16GB sd memory card, I can record 135 minutes 1080p HD video.

The still image shot quality is quite good too, and it is powered by the 15x optical lens35mm equivalent: 39.5 592.5mm. It gives you a useful telephoto camera and the image stabilization works well on the long concentrate end too. Last weekend with this camera, I easily took many nice pictures of two bears far far away from me. Most of other HD camcorders only have 10x lens.

All the button and menu are well intended. It is easy to use and I do not have to read the manual. LCD panel is in good size too.

Canon Face Detection is a nice feature. The same high quality Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in Canon High meaning camcorders. Up to 35 faces may be detected automatically, and nine detection frames may be displayed at one time. Face Detection assures razor sharp concentrate and natural, correct contact of the chosen subjects.

Okay, let me also talk about many cons. 1st, like one of the other reviewer said, the software coming with it sucks! It can only edit the original format from the camcorder and output to same format instead of other more liked formats. Thanks god the newest windows media player support the video files directly from the camcorder. You may be able to just use the usb cable or pop the sd memory card into a card reader and copy all the .Mts file into your computer and rename them into .M2ts, then by double clicking it windows media player opens it now. But, windows movie maker can not handle them, and you may be able to upload .M2ts file to youtube.Com but the sound of the video will be cut off after a couple of seconds. If you want to edit your videos and share your videos, most likely you need purchase a converting software like total video converter

One thing I forgot to talk about, Its twin brother canon HF20 has exactly all the same configuration as HF200 except with 32GB interal memory. But HF20 is nearly 200 bucks costly than HF200. Now the SD memory card is so cheap. I propose you to purchase HF200 with a 16GB or 32GB SD card. Just do not forget to use class four or up SD card.

To summarize, in general it is the best entry level HD camcorder. With the price drop alert subscription from pricetrace.Com, I got it from for only $560.5. It’s worth every penny.

Great camcorder, but get a bigger battery like the BP 827, the default one makes a nice backup.

The software provided sucks, and you must figure out by yourself which program does what: The major interface can upload videos, but not play or edit them, as it does for photos. It also creates a clutter of Start menu shortcuts in Windows that you do not need since these programs are called by the major program, ZoomBrowser. About the Pixela video editing software provided, well, let us just say that it is better forgotten.

Only 15 music tracks in wave format are provided to use as soundtrack.

There is a Canon online photo storage offer that you most likely do not need if you already have a blog or email provider.

The good thing is that the AVCHD format of this camcorder is supported by Windows Media Player eleven at least on my Vista final machine. Not sure if it is native to Windows or if it came with other software I installed. The MTS file extension wasn’t supported, though, you have to add it: Open a MTS file from Windows Explorer, decide “Select an installed program”, choose Windows Media Player and the checkbox to remember it.

Transferring the videos using the software provided is cumbersome cantbearsome really: You need both the USB and power cables, and clicking your way through some screens on the camcorder before the move can start. I could start the photo move from either the camcorder or the computer, but only from the computer for videos.

My suggestion: do not install any of the software, it is easier to just copy the files from a card reader to your hard disk using Windows Explorer. You may be able to get a multi 23 in 1 card reader for about $20, get rid of this useless floppy drive, and add a front USB port to your PC!

The camcorder in this offer doesn’t ship with any card, you have to purchase one individually. 16GB is good enough for medium quality. If you need higher quality or uninterrupted shooting, you may want to most likely get two cards, like a 32GB card for long capacity and a smaller one as a backup while uploading the videos from the 1st card. Transcend SDHC Class six cards are from a good brand at decent prices.

One more thing: This camcorder is small and light, and its true HD resolution means that it’s hard to shoot without making jumpy videos, you have to hold it with two hands or more. The fitted stabilizer can only help so far, and won’t save you from the butterfly effect: A wing beat on the other side of the planet WILL shake your video. On the other hand, nobody can see the difference if you shot your video drunk or sober, so enjoy the beer. I found a tripod useful when shooting from a static place is OK, any should do because the camcorder is so light.

If you need a bag, the Lowepro Edit 110 is just the right size and fits the camcorder with the biggest battery, another battery, the power adapter, the remote and as many SDHC cards as you need. The camcorder manual also fits in, but it is a pity it is so thick, as it will include three languages English, French, Spanish. There are 23 languages on the camcorder’s menus. Cables will not fit. BTW, the camcorder ships without a HDMI cable, you have to get your if you have a AVCHD compatible TV and you want to playback on TV directly from the camcorder. Not needed if your TV has a card reader or is connected to your computer.

Lastly, check your computer rig, you may need another big disk 1 2 TB to store these videos, and more than one if you have to keep the original AVCHD videos for post production: DVD backups just will not do for this kind of files. If you do not have to keep the AVCHD files, burning DVDs is the best way to archive your movies. Just remember that in HD, DVDs are greatly compressed meaning losing many of the quality of your original AVCHD files. $13 will get you a basic USB IDE/SATA external adapter, a cheap way to use out of date hard disks to archive your videos.

I’ve made a video review, using the Flip super Camcorder, so that you may see the audio/video quality Keep in mind I had to compress the video a bit for Amazon, and I also show how to use the camcorder.

In my opinion, this is an excellent camcorder for a novice, or someone who just wants an easy to use camcorder that’s small and compact. I personally do not need more than two hours recording time and it is great not having to buy tapes.

The price is really less than many digital cameras. I have wanted to own a camcorder for a long time, and the Flip super has met my standards for: quality, value, and easy use.

I have two Flip camcorders the MinoHD, and the Flip super this product.

I think about this one to be the younger brother to the MinoHD, with lower video quality, but also many things I like better than the HD model. So I am giving this 3.5 stars, and here is why.

Here’s what I like BETTER:

1. The bigger looking at screen on the camera as in comparison to the HD variant, this one has a much better looking at screen and a much better field of vision. The HD variant must be many distance away from what you are filming to get a good view, but with the super you may be much closer to your subject and still see all around them

2. More space 120 minutes means I can carry this thing with me all day and take create 640×480 video, up to two hours worth, and that is vital if you are out and about although I wish there was a way to put a memory card into it for more space

3. The product has a better surface for holding and gripping the camera. The HD variant is glossy and slick, where as the super variant has a more matte finish on the case so it is easier to hold.

Here’s what I do not particularly care for:

1. It requires batteries. The HD model is rechargeable, so you just plug it into the USB on your computer and the battery recharges itself. The Flip super takes AA batteries, and while you surely can use rechargeable batteries, I think about this a step rearward. The batteries also add weight

2. It is only 640×480 this is pretty much bottom end for video catch these days, particularly when most digital cameras are now able to record in HD dimensions, if you’re super worried about presenting your finished video in HD, this product isn’t for you

What is the same?

1. The USB plug is a flip out in both models, you just press on the release latch and the USB plug flips out just plug it into your computer and the software starts up automatically note that the super variant does have the new variant of the software which has many extra picture catch and uploading alternatives you may be able to get this from the web site too

2. From power on, to prepared to go, both cameras are FAST. Push the power button, set the date/time only 1st time you turn it on and the camera is prepared to go. Push the record button and you are off. Much faster than many digital cams on the market.

3. One button recording same on both, it is a big red button that you can not miss.

4. Good sound quality. The mic on the front of the device gets the sound quite well, without the need for external mic.

5. TV output cable and plug. If you want to show your video on a TV without having a computer around, you may be able to use the included audio/video plug to watch your movies just remember that your battery will run down faster

Overall I think this is a great addition to the Flip video line just think about it the more buyer variant and prosumer HD level. For the price, storage space, and easy carrying it everywhere, I am giving it 3.5 stars. I removed 1.5 stars because of lack of rechargeable features, and it is somewhat heavier than the HD model.

This camcorder came with dead batteries. After some number of failed tries to start it, popped in new batteries and it started.

First of all this camcorder can not replace your regular video camera. It has restrictions by zoom and picture quality in low light.

I love this camcorder. I gave it five stars, because it takes “Easy” to a whole new level

You don’t have to worry about any flash card the format, the capacity, the ridiculous high price or tape or CD. It stores video and sound in its interior memory.

You don’t have to worry about carrying a USB cord because it has an inbuilt USB arm that pops out.

You don’t have to worry about carrying a software CD. The software is built into the camcorder and loads it when you connect it to your computer.

You don’t have to worry about recharging batteries because it runs on easily available two AA batteries but you may be able to purchase a rechargeable battery pack for a price from the Flip store.

You don’t have to worry about carrying another bag for a video camera. This camcorder easily fits into a purse or trouser pocket.

You don’t have to worry about your camcorder taking own sweet time to start up. This starts in a jiffy and you’re prepared to go.

You are prepared to catch and playback video at will, easily.

Construction:

Body is made of plastic like material. It seems good and feels quite light when you hold it. Battery cover is just below the lens and feels fragile. The attached USB arm, I feel, isn’t a good design. Though it’s light, I supply support to the camcorder when it’s attached to the USB port of my laptop. If you must connect it to a Desktop, it may hang awkwardly from the USB port I let it hang from my laptop USB port for about five minutes, it didn’t look it was in any danger of breaking off…You can purchase a USB connector from the Flip store at, of course, a price. The screen is clear to see what is being captured or to watch your video played.

Operation:

It is very easy to operate and has not many buttons. You start recording and playback videos right out of the box. Nothing to load, rewind, fast forward. If at all you have to go through the instruction manual, you may be able to cover it in about 15 minutes.

Picture Quality:

Under bright conditions and out in the open the picture quality is excellent. The picture is sharp and the colors, true and beautiful. Under well lit conditions inside, the picture again is excellent. But under low light conditions it’s grainy. Since it has restricted zoom, you have to move closer to the subject to get a good close up.

Sound Quality:

The sound quality is excellent. It’s sharp and clear

Software:

Self installing software installed without any problems on my Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit system. Again it’s easy to use and create movies with your videos. You may also catch snapshots from your videos through the software. This is great because now I don’t have to switch from video catch to still photo catch , then back again.

This camcorder is a well thought out quality product…

Finally.

I called for a price modification for this camcorder I paid $149.99 and the price fell by $15.00 three days after I received the camcorder. I has been informed that the price modification policy was canceled.Bummer.But the buyer service man was okay about returning the item and purchasing at the new lower price. Huh???

If I am going to use up more than a hundred bucks on an item or someplace around there, I do broad research 1st to know I got the best bang for the buck and, consequently, dodge any possible future buyer’s remorse.

I’ve realized that the time I use up doing my product comparisons is frequently time that others do not have so I may also share what I can.

I’ll start by saying that you will see my “Verified Purchase” on the Flip HD super Camcorder review because, clearly, that is the one I wound up purchasing and I will share with you why. But what I like in a camcorder may not suit your needs so I will break it down and let you choose what is best for you via what I found out:

Here are the pocket camcorders I compared:

Flip UltraHD will be called “F”

Flip Mino HD 2nd generation Will be called “M”

Creative Labs Vado HD eight GB 2nd generation Will be called “CL”

Kodak Zi6 Pocket HD Will be called “K”

Why HD cameras only? Lighter colors and better pictures, wider images

HD SHOOTING TIME:

F: 120 minutes.

M: 120 minutes

CL:120 minutes

K: 25 minutes with batteries they included, 120 minutes if you purchase an SD card

K: internally only 30 MB recording space but it has 32 GB expandable SD/SDHC card slot. Because it comes with such small recording space you really have to purchase an SD or SDHC card to maximize its possible, but the possible is really good and this will increase your capability to shoot longer.

All 720p which is excellent, just one step below the top 1080p format.

K: poor quality zoom on the one I tried but I still think it is 2x. It has a great macro concentrate for close up objects if, as an example, you see a bumble bee and want to shoot it on a leaf some inches away! Kinda cool.

Seems one or the other but of course if you need both you may be able to purchase the other.

SPEED:

K: choice of 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second.

VIEWING SCREEN: All 2″ except the Kodak was the biggest at 2.4″

IMPORTANT NOTES:

F: Best low light performance for the mini cameras though not perfect at all and least total of blurring and dropped frames I believe. You may be able to get an underwater case for this one! Though that may sound crazy for a Texan, we use the camera continuous on vacations and when we are not IN the water, we’re around the water.On boats, in the sand with sea mist, etc. Then we can dive in and record the fish. Comes preloaded with flipshare software.Just plug in to computer and it pops up.

M: Colors do not appear as good on the Mino as the other cameras. Thinnest camera. Be sure you get the one that only comes in the color aluminum or brushed metal. If it comes in any other colors it’s the first generation MinoHD and they improved upon that one in the newer models. Great audio. Better shooting in low light than most mini cameras. Camera comes preloaded with FlipShare software. Can get still pictures through flipshare software.

CL: Decent filming in low light. Software is preloaded in camcorder.

K: What appears to be metal in picture is really a chrome colored plastic. That said, this had the biggest looking at screen of all of them. 2.4″ poor in low light and seemed to have far more shaking and blurring. It also takes still pictures but they’re really really poor quality.Same as a lesser quality cell phone pictures but good in a pinch if you want a still shot and dont have cell or camera I s’pose. Heaviest for a pocket camera. Software isn’t preloaded in camcorder but a cd comes with it.

There were lootttts more I came across when researching the Flip super HD but they are many of my favorites.

CONCLUSION: Clearest picture and sound was vital to me, expert reviews that pointed to the Flip UltraHD also and I liked the fitted software and the case I can get to shoot underwater. It’s the number one selling camcorder also. So that was my personal decision making procedure. But, think about that if you need reading glasses none of that will matter if the 2″ screen is too small for your looking at the shots easily for playback in which case you may wish to get the Kodak if that is vital to you..

Also: No matter which one you get, you’ll most likely want a mini tripod if you ever want to be in the shot yourself do do not forget those.

Hope my obsessive comparing and contrasting for my own buying help helped you also if what you wanted in a camera was different from me. :

This Flip MinoHD camcorder is amazing the ideal thing for any family hoping to videotape the kids, friends, events, etc. 1st of all, it is totally idiot proof: when you get the box, there’s totally no assembly obliged. Your 1st guess about which buttons are the power switch, record button, and USB connector release will be correct, great intuitive design. The device looks and feels great as other reviewers mentioned and easily fits in your hand comfortably for long periods of time unlike my blackberry. It turns on and off instantly unlike my home computer or cell phone so you do not have to wait long to start recording that precious, fleeting moment.

The screen is a bit bigger than the last Flip Mino, but that is not a big deal. Image quality is better than ever, and not too shaky/bouncy. The USB connector is about the same still convenient, easy to connect, and you do not have to go running to find any special USB connector cable like my old digital camera. The audio is amazingly good, picking up faint background sounds that I had not noticed at the time of recording and picking up concurrent music and voices, near and far, with great quality. The 2 hour battery life is more than I ever use, so it is great, but I figure people who are videotaping complete concerts or watching grass grow may complain. Honestly I have not made use of the HD resolution, but I am sure that will be great when I start making my own rainforest nature shows. Meanwhile, the HD quality is better than anything I will ever need. By the way, I know other reviewers have said they can make the camcorder freeze up by zooming in or out throughout recording, but mine works good when I do that. I purposely tried to freeze it, but could not.

I saved the best for last: the Flip Video software. That is what made it more impressive! it’s ridiculously easy to setup, automatically starts when I plug in the camcorder, and makes it totally evident how to download the videos, play back, freeze frames to make photos, and share. And it is fast not much waiting for videos to load up like other video players. It is all in an easy to use, organized by video date layout alike to the iPod control panel a common comparison, it seems. I wish all software was this easy to use.

I greatly recommend this device it is a winner!

I have enjoyed every Flip since the 1st Mino and this 2nd Gen MinoHD exceeds all my expectations. It is still easy to use and easy to share video, but, the package is slicker than ever. No fingerprints on the brushed metal front, the 2″ screen is shows detail in any light, and the controls are more responsive than last Minos and MinoHDs. The audio is so good, my son’s Reggae band will not give it back.

PROS:

2″ screen is big and clear

Great HD video in normal to bright light

Better sound than a personal voice recorder

One thumb video shooting

Easy uploads and edits no format worries and YouTube friendly

HDMI output straight to HD panels

Brushed metal shrugs off fingerprints and nose prints don’t ask

Storage pouch doubles as lens cleaner

Lickable packaging

CONS:

Low light shots are grainy easily solved at price points $1,000 higher

USB plug is a little tight

The wrist strap was hard to mount due to brushed metal solved with a toothpick

In my last review of the Kodak Zi8 I was pretty irritated at the fact that whenever I used the fitted microphone the recorded videos had an annoying high pitch whine that made the audio from my videos nearly unusable. Kodak recognized that this was an issue and produced a firmware update that fixed the problem. It also fixed some other things like the last issue of the image to get darker as you zoomed in. They seem to fixed all of the big problems with this firmware fix.

I do tech product reviews so I need the following things:

External mic input most of my videos are shot wearing a lapel mic

Macro mode I have to get close to little tiny screens

SDHC memory I go to all day trade shows, I need 10+ hours of video

Power alternatives I have to be able to shoot while AC power is plugged in or use a big external battery.

Under $200 I am poor.

Because of these prerequisites no other camcorder can fit my needs. One cool thing about this camera is that it’s more upgradable than the other pocket cameras on the market.

Con:

The fitted microphone is OK now that they fixed the whining sound, but it is still not amazing.

Work around:

Do not use the interior mic. I use an Audio Technica lapel mic for one person interviews.Audio Technica ATR 3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone For events I ordered a Sony stereo mic to use instead of the fitted mic. Sony ECM DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone . Though I wish that Kodak made the interior mic better, for the most part I’m kind of excited that the Sony stereo mic will give me much better sound than any of the standard interior mics that any of the pocket cams have.

Con:

Electronic Image Stabilization EIS sucks many of juice. Also the Zi8 uses a proprietary battery rather than cheap swappable AA’s. Battery life when shooting continuous is 1hr 16min in 720p 60fps with EIS on. If you turn off EIS you get about 1hr 41min at 720p 60fps.

Work around:

Use the USB to power cable that comes with the camera in conjunction with an external battery source. This is a must if you’re going to be recording for more than an hour with EIS, cause that is about what the interior battery will give you. Tekkeon TekCharge Rechargeable Li Poly Battery you may be able to just stick this battery pack in your pocket and connect the charging cable to the Zi8. This will let you to record for a super long total of time. I have not tested to see what my total record time with the battery pack will be but it should be around 5X the standard recording time. About six hours with EIS on, nearly nine with it off This gives you the best battery life of nearly any camcorder. Sure it is another cost, but when you are at an all day trade show you do not have to worry about running out of juice.

Con:

Image stabilization can not rescue video you shoot while moving around. Any camera motion makes video terrible.

Work round:

Accept the fact you may want to most likely be using a mini tripod with this camera or at least stand still. As well, though it takes a bunch of time to procedure if you have the new iMovie the image stabilization processing you may be able to do is light years beyond what the EIS in the Kodak Zi8 can do.

One more vital note. Be sure you purchase quick SDHC memory cards for this thing. If your SD card isn’t fast enough the camera will record for like two seconds , then stop with an error. It took me a while to figure out why the camera kept stopping recording when in HD mode but worked good in SD mode. It was because of my old SD card. You have to be sure your SD card has a write speed of at least 9MB/s if you want to record in 1080p. These quick cards cost more, but you need them for any camcorder that’s going to record HD video to them, it is not just the Zi8. I think most Class six quick SDHC cards should work.

If you want to get the most out of this camera plan on spending another $100 $150 to purchase upgrade things. Personally I have come to the conclusion that the extra costs were worth it. It depends on what you plan on using the camera for. For a common mom purse cam this could not be my recommendation, I could say go with a Flip super HD. But for someone with specific needs like mine this camera can be the only one that fits the bill.

I rarely will type/review merchandise but I have been a little irritated reading the reviews of this product on and by users at other sites. Many users seem to think that this camera was intended to compete with costly, professional cameras that cost thousands of dollars and produce full HD quality video. That is not what this is. As well, while my camera has not had the ‘noise’ issue from the Mic, i have seen a camera that had the issue and its BARELY obvious. Its nearly like a calm background sound from a Florescent light or something.

Kodak has intended, marketed, and built a camera to compete with FLiP and has obviously made a FAR better product.

I’ll keep it short and sweet and 1st explain who I’m and what I’m using this camera for. I use it for:

Home Videos/Fun stuff with old buddies and friends

For work when I need many fast video that is easy to upload online, or put in iMovie and edit

For work when I need more complex videos that may require editing, or somewhat lengthy video but I want the easy use/portability.

I have seen many of the problems stated with the interior Mic and I have had none of them I do have the upgraded Firmware that’s now standard 1.03, and Kodak says this totally removes the issue.Again have never had the issue on my camera. A relative of mine was lucky enough to buy this product when Kodak did an ‘early’ release some months ago and sometimes his videos will have some a higher pitched background sound, but it does not get in the way with the sound from the video its just a light background sound that, honestly, I have heard on dozens of cameras. Do not forget, without an external Mic the camera only records mono so the sounds quality is not going to be great anyway!

The video is great, image stability is not as advanced as those available on costly cameras but it’s better than anything I have seen in a FLiP or another Kodak model. It does work and you may be able to see a difference, if its not big. Its SO easy to flip between video modes. The 1080p is awesome, but on occasion its nice to move back down to 720 and the 60fps to catch ‘action’ footage.

One negative which majority of people may see as a positive i do wish there were more settings, or at least the capability to play around with more features/edit modes. Its GREAT easy to use, its a point and shoot video camera but with the great lens and abilities, it looks like Kodak may have pretty easily had this camera competing with much higher class cameras. If all the hardware was put to great use this could compete with $500+ cameras. But I understand wanting to keep it simple.

I like having the SD card. Many people could favor the interior memory, and yes by the time you purchase a decent sized SD card the camera is costly than the FLiP, but, the FLiP has a restricted memory. This camera is restricted only by the size of the card.Definitely a positive!

Finally, I know people that are both in the TV business and do many of Video blogging and they’re drooling over this camera due to external mic potential. One reason lots of ‘pros’ did not like FLiP was due to audio issues. Kodak solved those, not to talk about better quality video.

Again this is not something to shoot with if your a young film maker or a die hard amateur cinematographer. But if you need something cheap to get many great quality video, or need something super easy to use that’s really movable..Take the plunge. And if your considering FLiP do not annoy.

Since I already own a Kodak zi6, I’ll restrict my review to comparison between Kodak zi8 and zi6. In general, I feel that zi8 is a important improvement over the last model. The video quality is certainly better than zi6 in all conditions, if outside in bright sunlight or indoors in low light. The firmware is superior giving a more user friendly interface and buttons layout is much nicer. Unlike zi6 where setting menus was hidden, this time you get direct access to settings as well as controlling the screen light, changing mic sensitivity, turning image stabilization on/off and enabling/disabling face recognition.

I think this is a great video camcorder at a great price. Go for it!

Update: Sep 24 2009

Upgraded to the new firmware 1.03, and this eliminated the background sound in my recordings completely! Wow. Thanks Kodak for listening to costumers and quickly fixing the mic bug.
