I had bought Creative PVP sometime back, but had to return it bcoz it uses Microsoft Media Player. Wrong media player choice. It makes the whole procedure of uploading media tiresome and slow. So i returned the Creative. I checked iRiver at the store and found that it didn’t use Windows Media Player. So I bought it. I have been playing with it over the past couple of weeks. It gives a DIVX codec software and related media converter software, that makes importing videos easy. Use the movable Media Center DIVX profile, when coverting videos.I use the AVI format to upload videos onto the player. It’s also a full shown mp3 player, voice recorder and a fm tuner. The speakers are bit low in volume, so have to use headphones in noisy situations. The fit and finish of the hardware isn’t as nice as Creative. The software has many spelling mistakes like “FM Tunner” instead of “FM Tuner”. But at the end of day, it does what it’s supposed to do. And it gives all the software and cables right out of the box. I’m in procedure of creating a PC established DVR solution, to catch and record live TV. IRiver will become my movable video system. IRiver may also send video signal’s to TVs through a provided port and cables.Provides USB Master port potential to interact with other USB port able devices, without using a PC. It comes with a nice hard case, that U can use to carry it around and to prop it up while watching it on an airplane. Battery is removable type, so u can purchase another one, if U are on a really long flight. PVP space is still evolving fast, so expect to see lots more new models coming out in next couple of months. If like me, u want one now, iRiver is an reasonable choice. You’ll need many experience in media conversion to effectively import videos in a watchable format. Experiment with video sizing, audio mixing etc till u get it right. IRiver also has released another PVP that uses Windows Media Player. Don’t purchase that, unless you have a full shown Windows Media Center PC.

An update to the review. Using Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 80 Video catch device USB based and excellent Pinnacle Video catch Software, I have been able to effectively catch TV output and import into iRiver. I had to reconvert the Dazzle AVI output files to iRiver AVI using the iRiver media converter software. Now I have a complete movable video solution. I’m a bit surprised it all really worked. I was able to catch HD channel outputs from my DISH TV satellite box using the AV parts in the back of the satellite receiver.

really I waited for the movable media player from Microsoft. But I heard unfortunately it will not come out soon. And I learned that iriver is in partnership with Microsoft for the movable media player.

Anyway, I have been using this little surprise for a week. I think it beats any movable media players in the market.

The battery hour is long. I about guess it lasts at least three times longer than my wife’s Ipod. The lcd display may be bigger, but still quite big as a movable player. Speaking of the quality of sound, you know irivier has superior sound quality to any other players.

I’m a digital camera mania. This device not only save files through the usb fort but also host usb port. So you may be able to read all the image files directly from the digital cameras. This is great.

It also has a FM tuner. One thing I found really great is that you may record the music directly from the radio, and you may be able to control the quality of sound files. It can be many kind of music piracy. Not sure though.

In sum, believe me, this one is a killer toy. I hope the price will be lower so that I can purchase one for my brother.

It does what it says it’ll do. But, the player has huge trouble with Xvid, despite of settings. Plan on only encoding in Divx. With Divx, it can handle 1500kbps, 640×480@30fps and lots of B frames. It also must have CBR MP3 to play the video in sync, if you have VBR with anything, you have to encode it over to CBR. The screen is not especially in depth because the pixel size is so big. With video, you’re restricted to 192kbps for audio, anything higher will cause a desync.

It also tends to hang while playing a “non standard” movie such as VBR MP3 or Xvid. You’ll have to take off the battery to reset the machine and let for control answer again. This problem is alleviated by making totally sure you are using Divx and CBR MP3. Over that, you lose the capability to fast forward/rewind through movies above 650MB. If you have a 1.3GB movie, you will have to break that up into smaller chunks if you plan on being able to fast forward through it. It will play the bigger file, and it will continue the movie at the stop point, but you won’t be able to fast forward.

Doesn’t play Vorbis/FLAC/ACC/AC3 audio, but it’ll handle VBR MP3 just good. The playlists are pretty standard, and the player will let you make your playlists. The radio uses the headset cord for it is antenna, and it does a great job with get. Radio reception is good. There’s a fitted microphone for recording audio to MP3, but you can not record from the radio.

The player comes with iRiver’s own little converter, and it is extraordinarly poor. They have pre selected alternatives, and it’s adjusted for encoding speed, not quality. Plus it’ll crash if you have different codecs on your machine.

You use up more than what you get. There are superior merchandise available for less money. Two stars due to price, three stars for the machine itself.

Flip super HD and Flip MinoHD,
    May 7, 2009

By&nbsp,Jeff “Jeff” Minneapolis, MN See all my reviews

I earlier owned the Flip MinoHD so this review is depending on a comparison between the Flip MinoHD and the new Flip UltraHD.

After reading about the Flip UltraHD’s addition of an HDMI output, bigger screen, and longer battery life I decided to sell my four month old Flip MinoHD and buy the Flip UltraHD. Since the MinoHD is sleek and diminutive in size, my 1st reaction to the UltraHD was that it was a pretty bit bigger and bulkier to hold, and has taken many time to get used to. But, unless you have used a MinoHD the bigger size of the UlraHD will most likely be less obvious. I found the camera controls on the UltraHD to be somewhat easier to operate and the touch sensitive buttons on the MinoHD. As far as video quality between the two, I compared two different videos and both are about the same, but, the colors seem to be somewhat more vibrant with the UltraHD.

If you’re trying to choose which one to buy, if maximum portability is vital to you than the MinoHD is the better choice. Otherwise, if you are looking compact camcorder with more features HDMI output, replaceable batteries, longer record time then you can not go wrong with the UltraHD.

My final wish is for Pure Digital/Cisco to introduce a MinoHD with all of same functionality as the UltraHD. Till then, the UltraHD is the all around better choice.

So when I was 17 and convinced that I could someday be famous I really wanted a video camcorder to attempt my hand at making movies, or to film myself to see if I had what it took to be a TV reporter, but never could justifying spending $500+ on one. Over the years I moved onto other tech cravings and ambitions. Then last year a friend showed me the Flip Mino and I had to have one. It was super easy to use and fun, and I started to get great videos of my own kids and captured times that otherwise could have been fleeting, as well as my youngest child’s 1st steps. I wish this had been around when I was a kid. Nevertheless the Mino is great, but it is tiny tiny tiny. That is convenient when it comes to having a camcorder on you at all times, or when trying to get into events that prohibit cameras, and the screen is really small. So I just picked up this new Flip the super HD. The screen is wonderfully big. It comes with a rechargeable AA battery back, which works through the USB, but it seems like you may be able to throw in regular AA batteries in a pinch. Sound quality is great, video looks better than the Mino. Only disadvantage with both the Mino and super is you must keep your hand steady when filming but I find that easier to do with the super than the Mino. As well, it is not ideal for filming kids’ concerts, because the zoom is only 2x. But for capturing otherwise fleeting times in great quality, the super HD is my standby. The software that comes with it makes it simple to email videos to family and friends, or to upload a video to Flickr or wherever. Bottom line is I have been carrying this thing around nonstop since I got it. Has not made me famous still, but I love my super.

    &nbsp,&nbsp,

first I went in to Best purchase to pick up a Mino HD so I could record studio and place “behind the scenes” photography shoots for my business. The employee I spoke to handed this to me saying “it does not come out for another week, but its cheaper than the Mino that’s on sale”. It was a no brainer for me to pick up.

Its a nice little unit, compact, fits in my back pocket if needed, and the controls are basic click da big red button to record. Click da big red button again to stop. Simplicity at its finest.

I love that the unit has a USB built right in, but I still use a USB extension because I am using an iMac, and since it ends up hanging upside down, I do not want to add stress to the USB prong.

I have not used the fitted editing software, as I am importing my files into iMovie and editing from that.

Quality wise, I’d say is pretty darn good considering its about the size of a box of Necco valentine sweet hearts candy. But, I must insist that it’s to be used as a stationary “fixed” lens, and not to use the digital zoom. Once that digital zoom can be used, the quality, like any digital zoom, suffers largely. To circumvent this, I have super glued a step down ring to the front of my super HD so I can screw on a large angle and a telephoto lens. If you do not mind Frankenstein ing your super HD, then go for it.

I have not done much low light shooting with it, but I have a feeling that it may get somewhat noisy and grainy. I will see more results soon when I start using this inside the studio.

I’ll be primarily using my super HD on a tripod to record behind the scenes footage of my photography sessions, so I will have a way of keeping the camcorder static and not moving around many.

Overall, I feel this is largely worth the $199 I paid. You must remember that this is a dinky little device with a tiny sensor in it, so the quality will not be as good as a bigger dedicated video camera, or one of the newer DSLR’s with the fitted high def. Apples to Oranges.

With a little extra cash and many super glue, you may be able to get more reach and large angle out of the unit.

    .

Great little unit. Do not come in to this expecting a goose that lays golden eggs. For what it’s, it does well.

    Recommended.

:: edit people have been asking about the wide angle mod you may be able to do. I picked up a Sunpak 37mm .5x video camera lens that comes with a set of step up/step down rings. I glued one of the rings around the lens on the super, let it dry, and it lets me to screw the large angle lens over the present lens. I picked the large angle lens up at Best purchase. Can not find a link here for the item.

DIGIC four also makes possible the i Contrast Intelligent Contrast Correction system, which controls the reimbursement level in pixel units to brighten black regions while leaving bright regions unchanged for better pictures where the major subject is black, and more natural transition. The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can use i Contrast in playback mode to change pictures that were shot without the setting activated.

Red eye Correction gives three alternatives for removing red eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1 Red eye Correction throughout shooting really identifies and corrects red eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2 The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH may be set to automatically detect and correct red eye throughout image playback. 3 you may be able to manually find any red eyes in a scene throughout image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to take off them.

Life doesn&rsquo,t give you second chances to catch special times. That&rsquo,s why the PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that decreases the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO may be extended to 3200 when you choose ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

The SD1200 has many big changes over its predecessor SD1100, and is the smallest, best intended Elph I have used far.

I’ve owned many models of Elph, this is my sixth or seventh, so my review is aimed particularly at other serial Canon holders. I usually compare the SD1200 to the SD1100.

The big changes: Digic4 and a bigger CCD sensor. The slight increase in CCD size 1/2.3″ vs 1/2.5″ should make for “cleaner” photos. And Digic4 promises faster/cleaner shots also.

You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100, and “medium” M1 size is 6MP. JPG quality is down to two setting: good or Normal.

SD1200 is only somewhat smaller than the SD1100, but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body no bump out.

The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink. Good news: my average sized male hands can still comfortably hold it, barely not covering lens, flash, or resting on the LCD. But the round power button is nearly too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails.

1200′s new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh vs 760mAh for SD1100. There is also a new charger not matched with the old batteries, a glossy white colored model to blend into your wall.

The buttons and menus are simplified. There is now a button for review mode, pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the last state. Useful. The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings, not have to use menus for that switch.

Uninterrupted mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu on the SD1100, they had dedicated buttons.

A SD card is not included. This seems right to me, a 32MB card is barely useful, and with the down pressure on electronics prices, I can not imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive/bigger card. Many people will find this lack annoying.

The A/V output is gone, and the USB connector now serves both reasons both types of included cables now have a USB end

A new variant of Canon software is needed for this model, Zoombrowser 6.3. Canon usually requires a new release for each new family/season of cameras. Unfortunately, the CameraWindow software was intentionally dumbed down in the 6.X software and not offers the alternatives to delete your photos have to go through the OS, nor to chose custom naming for the downloads. I say intentionally, since I asked Canon customer support about it and they stated the changes weren’t bugs. The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5.X, corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season.

In informal indoor tests, the 1200 seemed more prepared to go to ISO400 often too “noisy” to be useful when the SD1100 could have chosen ISO200.

The SD1200 and SD1100 have same specifications on their optics. But, I noticed a more pronounced barrel distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide angle. Still only noticable in close up shots of straight edged things at wide angle

In a informal speed test, the SD1200 took/stored photos notably faster the SD1100 same scene, continuous mode, same brand SD card, in spite of the 1200′s image size being bigger.

Canon’s paper manuals have been shrinking steadily. With this model, the only manual included is a quick start guide, the rest is on CD ROM.

The packaging is more economical than before, about half the size of the SD1100′s box.

Sadly, there’s no HD video mode, though all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD. SD1200 holders are stuck with 640×480 video.

Canon has some number of sub series inside the compact Elph line, varying usually by asthetics and optics. The SD1200 is replacement to the series that included the SD1100, SD1000, and SD600. These all favor a classic, thin design. If you are unfamiliar with Canon’s Powershot cameras, there is lots of good material out there on camera sites like dpreview.

In general, the small sensors and optics in all ultra compact digital cameras lead to many optical quirks such as barrelling, chromatic aberrations, over/under exposure in bright sunlight/shade, and underpowered flashes. That is inherent to the size of camera, and vendors attempt to correct these effects in their on board processing. My opinion is that Canon does a great job of correcting for these issues and the Elphs as well as the SD1200 take good photos for their size.

It’s questionable that a SD1100 owner could exactly find this a compelling upgrade other than the Digic4, but this is an excellent compact camera in all ways. Separately from the noteworthy quirks: the lack of HD and the restricted features in the download software, this camera is greatly suggested.

I bought the SD110 3.2MP back in 2004 and decided it was time to upgrade this year as it showed many age. The new variant of that same line is the SD1200. I have had it for some weeks now and have some observations. The SD1200 is much faster from the time you turn it on till it’s prepared to shoot as in comparison to the SD110. Next, the screen is far better than the one on the SD110. Bright and readable in sunlight. The camera itself is smaller than the SD110 as you may expect but does feel a little cheaper. So far I have taken the SD1200 to three major events. A birthday party, K 4 graduation, backyard play time. The birthday part pictures didn’t turn out well in auto mode. We were indoors Pump it up and the lighting was most likely not the best. The pictures were blurry for the most part. I had the same issue at the second event K 4 graduation but this time I switched to manual mode and used the “indoor” setting. This largely improved the picture. , the outdoor shots turned out looking great in auto mode. With the SD110 the auto mode was generally better than any of the manual settings. It looks with the SD1200 that isn’t the case. I’ll continue to explore the settings/features of the camera. I expected the SD1200 to be far superior to my five year old SD110 but so far the pictures themselves haven’t turned out markedly better.

Wow! This is the third Cannon Elph camera that I owned. Cannon hit a home run with this one. I can not seem to take a bad picture with this camera. I use it for work and take pictures all day long under different situations. Everything operates on auto, the camera switches automatically between long distance and macro modes. It can produce great pictures in different lighting situations, where my others cameras failed in the past.

This is about my 25th digital camera that I have bought, we really wear them out through use, and I’ll buy this same camera again, and greatly recommend it to you. You’ll be pleased. The only negative that I can say is that the camera is nearly too small for my big hands and the camera disappears in your pockets and you’ll forget that you’re carrying it! Really, that isn’t a problem, and really most likely a plus if you’re on vacation and do not want to be lugging around many big war club old camera to take many pics.

I can not recommend this camera more. I just plain love it.
